Mossbauer Spectroscopy of Iron Biomineralization Products in Magnetotactic Bacteria

چکیده
Mcissbauer spectroscopy is a nuclear i-rav resonance technique that has been extensively tv!i 'iill' s,,'stems. applied to the study of the electronic properties of iron in biological '. The power of the technique lies in its sensitivity to the effects of the physical environment (nature ]18 lw and disposition of ligands, magnetic structure, etc.) on 57Fe nuclei. Moreover, it is sensitive ' only to "'Fe so 11 is uot affected by other elements in the system, except as thev affect the f It llO y discriminatiDn nDnequivalent environment of the iron atoms. The technique allows i atio of o iron sites as opposed to magnetic susceptibiJitv or magnetization measurements which lump l logether contributions from all the sources in the sample. A.s extensive reviews of Moss /\ bauer spectmscop)' are available (Greenwood and Gibb, 1971: Bancroft, 1973: Cohen, 1976. y , 1981J we will only give a brief introduction here, focusing on 57Fe, This will be followed ) " biol11ineralization by a review of spectroscopy of iron in mineraliz t products, and of magnetic inclu sions in magnetotactic bacteria, l11agnetota u

Magnetite in freshwater magnetotactic bacteria.
A previously undescribed magnetotactic spirillum isolated from a freshwater swamp was mass cultured in the magnetic as well as the nonmagnetic state in chemically defined culture media. Results of Mossbauer spectroscopic analysis applied to whole cells identifies magnetite as a constituent of these magnetic bacteria.
متن کاملFormation of magnetosomes in magnetotactic bacteria.
The ability of magnetotactic bacteria to orient and migrate along geomagnetic field lines is based on intracellular magnetic structures, the magnetosomes, which comprise nano-sized, membrane bound crystals of magnetic iron minerals. The formation of magnetosomes is achieved by a biological mechanism that controls the accumulation of iron and the biomineralization of magnetic crystals with a cha...
متن کاملBiologically Controlled Mineralization of Magnetic Iron Minerals by Magnetotactic Bacteria
The biomineralization of several magnetic iron minerals, including the iron oxide magnetite (Fe30 4 ; Fe 2I Fe/+04 ) and the iron sulfides greigite (Fe3S4 ) and pyrrhotite (Fe7SS)' can be mediated by bacteria as well as by other organisms. These minerals are known to be synthesized by procaryotes in one of two fundamentally different modes of biomineralization. The first is uncontrolled mineral...
متن کاملMagnetotactic bacteria form magnetite from a phosphate-rich ferric hydroxide via nanometric ferric (oxyhydr)oxide intermediates.
The iron oxide mineral magnetite (Fe3O4) is produced by various organisms to exploit magnetic and mechanical properties. Magnetotactic bacteria have become one of the best model organisms for studying magnetite biomineralization, as their genomes are sequenced and tools are available for their genetic manipulation. However, the chemical route by which magnetite is formed intracellularly within ...
متن کاملDiversity and ecology of and biomineralization by magnetotactic bacteria.
Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) biomineralize intracellular, membrane-bounded crystals of magnetite (Fe3 O4 ) and/or greigite (Fe3 S4 ) called magnetosomes. MTB play important roles in the geochemical cycling of iron, sulfur, nitrogen and carbon. Significantly, they also represent an intriguing model system not just for the study of microbial biomineralization but also for magnetoreception, prokar...
